Fair Trade Fortnight is an annual event that celebrates the importance of buying fair trade products. This year it takes place February 27- March 13. It is an opportunity to bring attention to the positive impact that fair trade has on communities around the world, especially for women. During this time, people are encouraged to make an effort to purchase fair trade products, in order to support artisans in developing countries.
Buying fair trade products not only helps to improve the livelihoods of artisans, but it also helps to create a fairer and more equitable society. This can be especially beneficial for Latinas, who are often disadvantaged when it comes to economic opportunities.
How Fair Trade impacts Latinas Across the Globe
In many Latin American countries, women are often responsible for childcare and household duties, while men exclude them from participating in business, decision-making, and meetings due to machismo. Fair Trade Certified cooperatives require proportional gender representation on worker committees, providing women with an equal voice at every level. This creates opportunities for women to overcome gender discrimination and to contribute to their communities. Many are part of co-ops that also invest in community development which helps educate young girls and women.
Community Development Funds, generated by each fair trade purchase, are often allocated by voting, and women often use these funds to establish gender equality workshops or provide low-interest loans to help female entrepreneurs start their own businesses. By empowering female workers, other women are also inspired to pursue their dreams and improve their lives, overcoming oppressive cultural norms such as machismo. They then have their own source of income shifting power dynamics in their community and homes.
